Phillip Alward, MD

Dr. Phillip Alward, M.D. joined Prairie Eye Center in April of 2017. Dr. Alward graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Illinois in 1973. From there he gained his M.D. from Chicago Medical school, graduating in the top third of his class. He was a resident first at St. Louis Group Hospitals in the Department of Internal Medicine from 1976-to 1977, and also at the University of Illinois Department of Ophthalmology from 1977-to 1980.

Dr. Alward spent several years in teaching and research for both electrical engineering and ophthalmology at the University of Illinois. He was a pre-residency fellow in glaucoma at the University of Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary. From his previous work and research, Dr. Alward designed several technologies for eye health and surgical instruments including the intraocular lens implant, iris retractor, and nucleus stabilizer, among several other tools prominent in ophthalmology today.

Dr. Alward is able to diagnose, treat and perform various types of surgeries for diseases, injuries, or trauma of the eye. He may treat disorders such as dry eyes, glaucoma, cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, and other retinal disorders.

Dr. Alward has been nominated for the last 15 years to be included in “The Best Doctors in America: Midwest Region.”
